The Great World Bank Job
Breaking News: Paul Wolfowitz is stepping down as head of the World Bank on the 30th of June.
Tony Blair leaves office on the 27th of June.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Wolfowitz -- a key architect of the Iraq war -- was appointed by George W. Bush. His stated aim was to the world's poorest people. He promptly awarded his girlfriend a major pay rise.
Blair -- a key architect of the Iraq war -- is a close friend of George W. Bush. He has repeatedly stated his interest in helping the world's poorest, especially in Africa.
To date, the World Bank has singularly failed in its mission to reduce global poverty. Instead, it has served the interests of the international banking community. By a bizarre coincidence, that's the sector where most of its employees begin, and end, their careers.
Personally, I think the World Bank will never achieve its mission, until it starts awarding big performance bonuses to its board members, for achieving real improvements in the standard of living of the world's poorest people.
Postcards endorsing this strategy should be sent to 10 Downing St.
