Explosive New Comedy Previews in Dublin
In a desperate bid to reduce US carbon emissions, an environmentalist joins Al Qaeda. An explosive new comedy, about implementing the polluter pays principle.
This is the premise behind Eco-Friendly Jihad – the second show from The Dubliner's own Abie Philbin Bowman, described by Time magazine recently as “a rising star on the Irish stand-up scene”. Abie's debut, Jesus: The Guantanamo Years sold out across Ireland, and at the Edinburgh Fringe 2006–7; toured London’s West End, the USA and Pakistan; and was even boycotted by Ian Paisley’s DUP. (It's now available iTunes).
Abie observes, “I know some people will assume that I just sandwich
controversial issues together for the sake of a catchy title. But the truth is
that I'm a hardcore news junkie. So inevitably, I write jokes about what’s in
the headlines. If I’d wanted to generate controversy, I would have called my
show Confessions of a Gay Iranian
Abortionist."
In August 2008, Eco-Friendly
Jihad is travelling to the Edinburgh Fringe, where it will play at the
Underbelly, from July 31st – August 24th. Several Irish
previews have been scheduled for July (see below).
Abie insists “I do criticise America, but I'm not anti-American. I certainly
wouldn't want to live in a world dominated by China, Russia or Iran. Ideally,
I'd like to live in a world run by a coalition of Holland, Sweden, Canada and
New Zealand. But I'm not holding my breath.”
