When we were kids, our dad often took us to Dollymount Strand, Donabate, the Botanic Gardens and Fairview. I still have a lot of affection for these places and for those memories.
Restaurants
I love Town Bar & Grill – just walking in there feels like a special night out. The wine tastes more expensive than it costs. That suits me very well.
Food
I don’t cook very much. And when I do, the problem is I just can’t get my wife or kids to eat it. I must admit, I find it rather hard to get it down myself.
Bars I don’t like bars much. I’d prefer having a glass of wine with some food at a restaurant. If we do go out, it’s to Renards or Lillie’s.
shopping I don’t like shopping. My wife puts me off it. She does enough of it for the whole of Ballinteer.
Dublin Ups When people are good, they’re great. I love living here where my mates are, where my family is, where my mom is, and walking the streets I know so well.
Dublin Downs
I dislike meeting people with bad manners.
Architecture
I like the City Arts Centre on the south corner of the Matt Talbot Bridge. It’s bit of a of kip, but that’s where I got to know my wife. And from an architectural point of view, you can see the Customs House on the opposite side of the river.
Hobbies
I love to dissapear for a few hours into the Dublin Mountains on my off-road motorcycle. Up there, I forget about everything. It makes me feel so at peace.
Prized Posession
I always wear two rings – one my wedding band, the other a gift. I don’t feel complete unless I have them on. I have a bible that I keep in the studio which my parents gave me for Christmas in 1973. I also have a second-hand, top-of-range Merc that I feel really good getting into, as pathetic as it might sound. I guess it’s the ‘little man in the big car’ thing.
I never played sports, but my fondest memory of watching it on television was being allowed to stay up late to see the great Muhammad Ali fight. I remember his bouts with Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson and George Foreman so well. Now I’m into to cage fighting and I can’t wait for the next big fight. The seven of us savour every moment – who says fighting can’t bring families together?
Pets
We have quite a few reptiles. We also have three dogs: a handsome German Shepherd called Brian, a Shar Pei called Seamus, and little terrier called Bono.
Work
That might not be the right word for what I do. It’s the stuff that I have to do in between painting that feels like work. I get up when I want and I go to bed when I want. Boy, do I feel lucky to do what I do.
Music
The most memorable live bands I have seen are the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, REM, the Rolling Stones, and especially U2, who always seem like so much more than rock ‘n roll.
TV and Radio
My wife and sis will tell you I have been caught in the early hours of the morning watching the 24-hour fishing channel. It’s odd, because I have no interest in fishing.
