Fiachra McCarthy is well impressed by the new three-man show at the Project
You don't get many examples of musicals featuring multiple murderers any more. We feel certain that Mamma Mia! would have benefitted from a good sprinkling of axe murdererings and such. But Coconut Raft, which has just started a 12-night run at the Project Cube, is pretty extraordinary in this and many other regards.
It jumps between a jail-break and a 1930s musical revue about...a jail-break. Expect to be flung from toe-tapping to nail-biting as the tension builds around the increasingly blighted breakout; the good-time, all-singing-all-dancing interjections start to take on a surreal and sinister bent.
Strong performances from all three cast members mean that the constantly transforming narrative never confuses, and the musical numbers are clever, funny and damn catchy. Some of the songs are real ear worms and easily stand up on their own, rather than being just a novelty on the side.
Keep an eye out for the pitch-perfect 1930s cabaret spiel – the timing is spot-on and the delivery wonderfully throw-away. Brilliant to see three young performers throwing their mixed bag of talents together in such a clever and original way.
