The Electric Picnic gets a little more electricity

History has thrown up some unlikely collaborations over time: Eminem and Elton John, David Bowie and Bing Crosbie, the Vichy government.

But this might be the strangest pairing of all time: The Rubberbandits featuring Crystal Swing at the Electric Picnic.

Limerick gangster comedy duo who rap about greyhounds, tracksuits and sniffing glue meets Cork country and western trio who dance the hucklebuck and sing about drinking tequila.

Actually that make perfect sense.

It's the World Cup opening ceremony right now and while Dunphy and crew criticize the singing and laud  the dancing ("They're all great dancers from that part of the world," reports Graeme Sounesss), we can't help thinking of the greatest World Cup opener ever.

No, not Germany 06's descending cages or Japan/Korea's screaming rings.

But USA '94, when Diana Ross lost her nerve on the big occasion and blew it like Roberto Baggio.

The Rubberbandits

"For Christmas I want the petrified tears of a sparrow in a bottle shaped like misery"

They may just seem like comedy rapsters with plastic bags stretched across their heads, but (as can be seen from the clip below - NSFW) The Rubberbandits combine Pythonesque absurdism, Limerick petty crime, iconoclastic cursing and downright blasphemy in their outrageous stage.

While other similar acts might be happy with just swearing a bit and causing a ruckus, Mr. Chrome and Blind Boy Boat Club get their hands sticky with a weird mixture of abstruse nonsense and rural rage.

And that has to be applauded at a time when Irish comedy seems to have the bite of a pygmy shrew.

The Rubberbandits are next in Dublin at the Twisted Pepper on 5 June 2010, when they will be interviewed on stage by Cian Hallinan, after which they'll perform a live show.
